C$ may be used to pay a portion of rent, access basic goods, entertainment, and be spent at local businesses (such as the FreshRoutes Mobile Grocery Store).

Calgary Dollars (C$) has been operating an Affordable Housing Partnership Program since 2018.

This program uses a community economic development approach to prioritize and activate alternative forms of capital, providing greater income support, enhanced food security, and community cohesion.

Housing agencies save money due to increased resident stability, increased resident participation in their community, and by localizing spending with a circulated currency that stays in the community, promoting new ideas and services that otherwise would not be available. An example of this is our tenant led Household Lending Library, where useful items like vacuums, tools, or cleaning supplies are rented and shared through Calgary Dollars.

Calgary Dollars is supported by The City of Calgary’s Family and Community Support Services funding. In this way we have a model of municipal public banking where the City (through Calgary Dollars) is creating local credit to address issues of affordable housing and poverty.

C$ supports residents to engage with their local landscapes and helps to address socio-economic inequities in one of Canada’s largest cities.
